Kid's Hospitalizations for Type 2 Diabetes swelling

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

If the study of the New York University School of Medicine (NYU) is to be believed, the number of children having type 2 diabetes is swelling on a startling rate. There is awful rise of 200 % percent in the hospitalizations for children worse affected with type 2 diabetes.

Escorted by Dr. Rhonda Graves, NYU's research team scrutinized the countrywide discharge records of the years 1997, 2000 and 2003. It was noticed that the frequency of kid's hospitalizations for type 2 diabetes was dramatically high than that of children with type 1 diabetes which is 200% in the contrast of 15%.

The findings contrived by Dr. Graves and her team were lined up to be exhibited at the annual assembly of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Toronto.

On a sad note, childhood obesity is the main culprit behind such alarming rate as children who endure type 2 diabetes are usually found obese. "Epidemic disease called obesity has altered a mid-life chronic disease into a pediatric blight," says Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University School of Medicine's Prevention Research Center, who wasn't engrossed within this research. Childhood obesity is a major cause of diabetes and diabetes can lead to critical impediments even in kids.

"If present scenario continues for long, cases like this might turn into rule instead of mere terrible exception." Dr. Katz comments.
