Type 2 Diabetes Cases to Swell In Galway as Obesity Rate Rise

A local GP has cautioned that the number of type 2 diabetics is set to ascend in Galway.Dr Eamon Twomey of Turloughmore Medical Centre disclosed nearly 6,800 people are under the influence of the disease in the region.

He stated that this development may possibly persist as obesity rate swell and populace age.

"We are aware of the fact that the number of diabetic people has augmented remarkably in recent years and this is expected to carry on as obesity rates increase and our population age" he avowed.

"The huge majority of diabetes cases are type 2 and approximately 6,793 people suffer from this specific concern in County Galway alone."

At the worst, if one member of the family suffers from this disease, other family members may also be at risk of getting type 2 diabetes, he avers. This becomes almost certain if they are above 40 and are overweight.

Dr Twomey was talking in response to a novel national study on Type 2 diabetes. It was discovered that one out of four surveyed people think their ailment is not managed properly, one out of five believe the disease is usurping their living and one out of six uphold the adverse effects of their treatment are intricate to survive with.

Details of the survey were declared on the launch of Januvia, a novel breakthrough once-daily oral remedy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in Ireland. Januvia works by increasing the body's natural mechanisms to remarkably lower down the blood sugar.

Dr Twomey hailed the new cure. "It is a remarkable treatment to effectively decrease the blood sugar level".

Diabetes takes place when the body is unable to utilize sugar (glucose) suitably. This in turn, leads to an increase in the sum of blood sugar which may affect different body parts, if not treated well.
